Magazine Cover Ideas

                                     Magazine Covers

Covers on a magazine can make or break getting the readers attention. If your magazine cover is a total mess you may not grab the view of the readers. The layout, masthead placement, and main image choices play a large roll in how well put together your cover will appear.

                                                          The Covers

In this image the masthead is in the center with the sky in the back, the main image is a field while the cover lines are placed through out. The bar code is placed in the bottom left corner. This magazine cover compared to most gaming magazines is different. In stead of there being a charterer as a main image it goes for a more relaxed tone and instead is a setting image. This gives a more mellow relaxed feel due to the heavy blue and green colors represented. I chose to put the masthead at the top to make sure it didn't take away from the main image. The headline is mixed in with the grass to make a use of blank space. Lastly the bar code and price are placed at the far left bottom corner to take as little attention away from the main image as possible as it is the main focus. The font for the masthead would be display font as to give a classy yet fun look to the magazine, and the cover line/headline would be sans serif to look relatively basic.

In this cover the masthead is once again at the top and the main image isn't covering it. The main image is of a victory match in the game Valorant. The headline is placed on the ground bellow the dead body. The bar code on the far left is placed there to once again to not take away from the main image. The main image is much more detailed and vibrant thus drawing more attention to it. The Mast head is in modern serif font to give a bold look without taking away from our main attention, the main image. The cover lines and the headline would be in sans serif to give a simplistic look. The color of the text would be yellow as it is the opposite color of the main image, aka the colors are complimentary. The yellow also has a higher chance of attracting the audience due to its bright nature. This has a closer tie to my genre as most gaming magazines have a character as their main image with yellow fonts, for example Game PC magazine. However it also contradicts it as isn't just one character and there is also a heavy setting display in the main image.

In this image there is a play station controller with a large masthead above it. The masthead takes more attention that the actual main image does. The main image almost blends into the masthead. The prices is in the far left opposite of the bar code which is in the bottom right, which strays from the normal magazine set up in general which usually has them directly under one another. The controller is in a white color so the masthead is in black so they can contrast each other. The black and white mix give a classy look so the font would be display font to compliment that while once again the headline and cover line would be in sans serif to simply remain simple. This strays from the main gaming conventions as the main image isn't a character and the main focus is more the masthead than the actual main image. However, even if it looks classy it is highly impractical as its main focus is the masthead which usually fails to draw attention from those who wish to read gaming magazines as they are more focused on visuals then texts.

In this image there is a heavy pull on the main image (the gaming set up) and slight attention on the masthead. The gaming set ups color is (even though not noticeable) green and white so to contradict as well as compliment it the masthead would either be a yellow color to draw attention but keep the main focus the main image. The yellow is also very similar once again to the basic gaming masthead color. The bar code would be at the bottom left and very minor to not contradict anything. The headline would be inside the PC monitor to almost be a part of the main image. The font would be sans serif for the masthead to create simplicity while the headline and cover line would be in serif to also give a simple look. The font, layout, and color scheme are all very similar to the conventions of gaming magazines however the main image strays from the usual up close character shot. This magazine set up is on the higher list of likely choices for my main magazine cover as it would catch attention of readers due to the color pop and the text blends in giving a seamless look also drawing in the attention of readers.

In this image there is a full body picture of a character with the masthead behind him. The character has high amounts purple in his outfit and powers, thus the title would be black to blend in as we don't want any contrast to take away from the main image. The main image is also in front of the masthead to give more definition to the character. This is much more similar to the conventions of regular gaming magazines when compared to the other 4 options. This is due to the fact that the main image is a character and the full attention is on this character. This however differs as the main image is usually behind the masthead instead of in front of it. The font for this cover would once again be serif to keep it simple and keep the definition on the main image while the headline and cover line would be sans serif. This magazine set up is my number two choice as it is very similar to the basic gaming magazine conventions and it would also grab attention of gaming magazine readers much easier.

                                                                        MY PERSONAL PICK

My top three are currently the gaming set up, the field image, and the full body character image. The gaming set is my number three as it is very different from the normal conventions as it has the headline in the monitor. The full body character is in second and this is due to the fact it has the highest chance of attacking viewers as well as it matches up with the most gaming conventions compared to the rest. In first place is the field image. It has the most differentiating characteristics than the rest. It is much softer and gives off calming vibes with its cool colors and soft font. It also doesn't have to many contrasting colors so it all blends together.

In conclusion all of these five cover options have their own way of connecting to gaming conventions. While they all have their own characteristics its important to choose the one that stands out and will catch the most viewers.
